Two main types
Standing seam
Raised seams with hidden fasteners. Clean lines, fewer places to leak, and the premium choice for homes.
Exposed-fastener panels
Ribbed panels screwed through the face. Economical for barns, shops and outbuildings; screws and washers need periodic checks.
Why metal
- Long life — often several decades.
- Sheds snow and water quickly.
- Handles sun with factory finishes made for UV.
- Fire resistant as a roof covering.
- Looks right on territorial and farmhouse styles.
Details that matter
Underlayment rated for metal, proper trim at eaves and rakes, flashing at walls and chimneys, and fasteners driven correctly — not too tight, not too loose. On exposed-fastener roofs, those screws are the maintenance item.

Roofing questions
Is a metal roof noisy in hail?
Over a solid deck with underlayment, it's usually not much louder than other roofs.
Can metal go over shingles?
Sometimes, depending on the roof and local rules. We'll tell you what's right for yours.
Will hail dent a metal roof?
Large hail can dent it. Heavier gauges and textured finishes hide it better.
